How to Choose a Contact Grill

Contact grills are a quick, simple and economical way to cook food in many catering applications. But there are so many to choose from where do you start?

Here are the questions to ask yourself to narrow down the search.

Single or Double?
Many of the double contact grills come with separate controls so that you can use one side in quiet periods and both sides when it’s busy. However some of the single contact grills have extra long plates which are particularly useful when cooking Panini’s such as the Roller Grill Panini L. A small single contact grill such as the Dualit 96000 takes up a very small amount of space where space is limited.

Flat or Ribbed?
This is purely down to customer preference. Do you want seared griddle markings on your food or not? What kind of food are you going to be cooking on your contact grill? Bacon may look better on a flat plated grill but a Panini wouldn’t be a Panini without the griddle markings. It all depends on how you want to present your food.

Which Features Do I Need?
Different manufacturers offer different added features to their products. For example the Lincat GG1 range of contact grills has cast aluminium plates which offer extremely even heat. The Rowlett RE200 models have economy switches meaning the contact grill can be put on standby but ready to be used when needed.

How Fast are Contact Grills?
All contact grills are a fast way of cooking almost any food due to the two plates that cook from both sides at once. Roller Grill and Rowlett provide approximate cooking times for their products. However general rules for cooking with contact grills is 1 minute of grill time per 1 cm of meat thickness and double that for frozen foods.
